Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I become a MetroHealth Volunteer?
    We encourage you to explore the volunteer opportunities on our website. After you have viewed the opportunities, please submit an online application. Please note that many of our programs have limited openings. We will do our best to place you in your area of interest.
  • What is the minimum age to volunteer?
    Summer Student Volunteer Program applicants must be 16 years of age by June 1, 2022.
  • Do volunteers need to be vaccinated for COVID-19?
    All in-person volunteers must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, as well as for seasonal flu. Virtual volunteer opportunities have different requirements, and these will be discussed during your interview.
  • What is the time commitment to volunteer at MetroHealth?
    While the time commitment may vary from opportunity to opportunity, we will do our best to accommodate your schedule. Most volunteer placements require a minimum commitment of three hours per week for at least six months. Summer Student Volunteer Program applicants must volunteer 2-3 hours per week for a minimum of 6 weeks between June and August 2022.
  • Is an interview required?
    Yes. Once your application is reviewed, you will receive an email to set up a phone or virtual interview. During the interview, you will learn more about the volunteer program and the onboarding process including background checks and health screening.
  • What is included in the onboarding appointment?
    Following your interview, you will receive information on how to schedule your onboarding appointment at our main campus, 2500 MetroHealth Drive, Cleveland OH 44109. The appointment consists of: Fingerprinting and ID badge photo, Drug/nicotine screening (urine test) *Please note that use of e-cigarettes (vaping) and nicotine replacement therapy products (gum, patches, etc.) are not permitted and will result in a positive screening, TB screening (blood draw), Seasonal flu shot when applicable. Some onboarding requirments do not apply to minors.
  • What type of orientation and training are required?
    Once your background checks and health screenings have cleared, you will receive an email to schedule a one-hour virtual orientation. At the conclusion of the orientation, you will need to complete a few additional documents before you can begin your volunteer assignment. Additional training is required for certain volunteer opportunities.
  • How long does the onboarding process take?
    Onboarding can take 2 - 3 weeks. This is based on you and your scheduling of each step in the process.
  • Does Volunteer Services oversee internships and other educational experiences?
    No. If you are interested in an opportunity to fulfill a graduation requirement or for school credit, please contact the specific department that you are interested in to inquire about availability.
  • What about shadowing or observing opportunities?
    If you are interested in shadowing or observing, please reach out to the individual employee you would like to shadow to learn more.
