Emergency Department Volunteer

Impact: Volunteers assist with ensuring an exceptional experience for patients and visitors in the Emergency Department by providing courtesy rounding and other non-clinical support.

Days/Hours: Daily 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. (3-hour shifts)
Qualifications: Must be able to interact with ill patients and families under stress. Must be able to follow directions from staff with minimal supervision. Calm and mature demeanor. Non-judgmental. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time. Three- to six-month minimum commitment required. Minimum age 18 and high school graduate.
Training: One-hour, department-specific volunteer training class provided by Emergency Department staff.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Upon arrival, check in with the charge nurse. Write your name and the hours that you will be volunteering on the grease board behind the charge desk. A volunteer label is on the bottom right corner of the board.

  2. Make courtesy rounds on patients who are waiting. Assist and/or notify nurse when necessary. Distribute comfort items, as appropriate.

  3. Escort patients from waiting areas to assigned rooms.

  4. Orient patient to room, including demonstrating how to use call button, TV controller and phone.

  5. Answer patient call lights in person. Address patients needs and/or notify nurse when necessary.

  6. Remain with children while parent is being examined, if another responsible adult is not present.

  7. Make courtesy rounds in the lobby when department is extremely busy, as directed by staff.

  8. Provide directions and escort assistance as directed by staff.

  9. Stock blanket warmers.

  10. Retrieve carts and wheelchairs belonging to the Emergency Department from other areas in the medical center.

  11. Assist with answering call lights IF all other work and rounding has been done.

  12. Fill out log sheet. At the end of your shift, turn in the completed form.

  13. Erase your name from the grease board as you leave.
